Happy International Women's Day! Today, we honour the global contributions made by women in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. As a company founded and led by a female entrepreneur, we take this day to reflect on the progress we've made toward gender equality and recognize the work that still needs to be done.
This year's International Women's Day theme is "embrace equity." It is a call to action to promote and develop gender equity globally. Adopting equity is understanding that everyone, regardless of gender, deserves equal chances, rights, and treatment in all spheres of life, including politics, the workplace, healthcare, and education. No barriers should prevent any person from achieving their full potential.
Throughout the past century, equity for women across the world has come a long way. Among other achievements, women have fought for and won the right to vote, shattered glass ceilings, entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers, and battled for reproductive freedom. Yet before we can say we have actual gender equity, there is still a long way to go.
Women continue to encounter systemic obstacles that restrict their prospects and potential in many regions of the world. They experience gender-based violence, job discrimination, and unequal compensation for equivalent work. The effects of poverty, lack of access to healthcare and education, and underrepresentation of women in politics and leadership positions are also disproportionately felt by women around the globe.
Everyone has a role in breaking down barriers and creating an equitable society. Women and their allies continue to shine a light on systemic inequalities and the root causes of those inequalities. As a local and global community, we must continue to have a zero-tolerance mindset towards any discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.
We stand by women worldwide challenging systems of oppression and advocating for policies that promote equity and fairness. We believe in equal access to education, to job opportunities, and believe that policies should promote fair economic mobility for every person.
Emterra, as one of Canada's largest environmental employers, is doing its part by continuously creating and building an inclusive and equitable workplace for all our employees. We value and appreciate every employee's contribution to the workforce. We see diversity as a strength and believe that every voice brings a unique perspective and deserves to be heard and respected. We empower women in our business by providing equal opportunities for development and remuneration, flexible work schedules, and a supportive and inclusive workplace culture.
The best way to celebrate women is by valuing their contribution, supporting them when they need support, and nurturing their unique role in our societies. This International Women's Day, we hope you will join us in honouring the contribution women make to our communities, our families, our work, and our lives.
