How to Roll this Seasonal Chore into the Circular Economy...

It’s that time of year again when you make the appointment with your local mechanic and lug your tires in and out of your garage. You probably don’t give this semi-annual duty much more thought, but if you did, you would discover that Ontarians alone get rid of more than 15 million tires annually! So what happens to these tires when they’ve reached their end of life?

Tire recycling facilities, like Emterra Tire Recycling (ETR), can transform your used wheels into products such as patio tiles, doormats, and rubberized playground materials.

Located in Brampton, Ontario, ETR follows a commitment to preventing these end-of-life products from being disposed of in landfills or littered on natural landscapes. To uphold its mission, ETR takes a zero-waste approach to resource recovery and recycling, separating tires into three parts - steel, fibre and rubber - through an emission-free process. The facility processes the equivalent of 3 million passenger tires per year, which produces over 40 million tonnes of recycled crumb rubber annually.

For over 15 years, Emterra Tire Recycling (ETR) has hauled and processed used tires to transform this ‘waste’ into resources. Collecting and hauling tires from over 1,500 locations, ETR is the only company in southwest and central Ontario that is a vertically integrated service provider, providing tire hauling, consolidation, and processing services.
