CHILLIWACK, BC (June 10, 2015) -- Stacks of personal documents and food donations testified to the continued success of the community Shred-a-Thon held this past Saturday at the Cottonwood Mall.

Hosted by Emterra Environmental and co-sponsored by the City of Chilliwack, Cottonwood Mall and Shred-It, residents brought in personal documents and paperwork to have them shredded and recycled free of charge.

Organizers estimate that more than 5440 kgs of personal documents were brought for secure and confidential destruction.

As part of the event, residents were encouraged to bring along food and cash donations, and they exceeded expectations! Over $2,000 was collected in cash donations which Emterra matched, bringing the total cash donation to the Salvation Army to over $4,000.   Attendees also generously donated 363 kgs of non-perishable food, which the Salvation Army will use to help feed local individuals and families.

“From piles of paper to mounds of food donations, the community Shred-a-Thon was a great success,” said Emterra’s Chilliwack Operations Manager, Paul Knight. “Our collective efforts will ensure that more paper will be reused, and that local residents and families will get the support they need.”

Over $3000 in cash donations and 1,500 pounds in non-perishable food items were collected at the last Shred-a-Thon which took place last December.

Shred-a-Thons are part of Emterra’s Community Care™ Program which seeks to improve the health and well being of the environment and communities across Canada. Since 2009, Emterra has raised over $17,000 in cash donations and has collected over 5800 kgs of food donations through bi-annual Shred-a-Thons. These special events have recycled over 25 tonnes of paper, diverting it from the landfill and into end markets where it will be used to make new paper products and packaging.
