Recycled Rides, Renewed Joy: Emterra Environmental and The WRENCH Make Cycling Accessible with Refurbished Bike Giveaways

September 10, 2025

This past summer, Emterra Environmental and The WRENCH (Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub) teamed up to do more than just give away bikes - they gave kids across Winnipeg the freedom to ride, the tools to stay safe, and a reason to smile.

Through a series of vibrant community Bike Bazaars, Emterra has sponsored the refurbishment and distribution of over 150 bicycles and helmets to children in underserved neighbourhoods. Each bike, lovingly restored by The WRENCH’s skilled team and volunteers, was saved from the landfill and given a second life.

The WRENCH is proud to partner with Emterra Environmental to provide over 150 bicycles to children in Winnipeg,” exclaimed Merrill Grant, Executive Director of The WRENCH. “With support from Emterra and community partners, our volunteers and mechanics refurbish bikes and fit each child with a safe, well-sized ride and a new helmet - laying the groundwork for fun, confident cycling.”

This initiative is part of Emterra Environmental’s Community Care™ program, which supports grassroots efforts that promote sustainability, inclusion, and well-being. Since 2017, Emterra has worked alongside The WRENCH to distribute bikes across the city through their annual Cycle of Giving event. In 2024, Emterra deepened its commitment by funding five annual bike and helmet giveaway events, reinforcing its firm belief in putting safety and sustainability at the forefront of its operations. In 2025, the cycle of kindness continues.

“Winnipeg is where our story began nearly 50 years ago,” said Emmie Leung, Founder and CEO of Emterra Environmental. Our continued partnership with The WRENCH reflects the values that guide us - community, safety, and sustainability - and we’re proud to continue strengthening the community ties that honour our roots.”

With support from community partners like Emterra Environmental, The WRENCH is able to overcome one of its biggest barriers - staff and volunteer capacity - to get more refurbished bikes into the hands of children and families across Winnipeg. United in purpose, this initiative helps youth build confidence, independence, and forge a lifelong connection to cycling.
