December 10, 2021

Peterborough's hometown hockey heroes, the Peterborough Petes, and Emterra Environmental, Peterborough’s recycling services partner, are making hockey accessible for everyone through their Try Hockey equipment drive taking place on December 17 and 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the southeast side of the Peterborough Memorial Centre parking lot.

The Petes, in partnership with Emterra Environmental, will collect hockey equipment from the community to reduce financial and social barriers for kids hoping to join the game of hockey. Requested equipment donations include skates, elbow pads, shin pads, shoulder pads, helmets, pants, sticks, bags, and goalie equipment.

“The Petes are excited to work alongside Emterra Environmental on this initiative and future Try Hockey programming in order to make the sport we love more accessible to the Peterborough community,” said Petes Director of Marketing and Growth, Shelbi Kilcollins.

The Try Hockey Equipment Drive is the first of many community initiatives to come from this partnership between the Petes and Emterra Environmental, marking another addition to the growing roster of initiatives in Emterra’s Community Care™ Program, which supports impactful local causes while heightening awareness around the circular economy, waste reduction, the importance of recycling, and linking community health to environmental sustainability.

“We are very excited to be officially kicking off our 3-year partnership with the Peterborough Petes with an event that exemplifies Emterra’s values of diversity, community and sustainability,” says Paulina Leung, Chief Sustainability Officer. “We look forward to further creating a circular economy in sports with the Petes and the Peterborough community through this Community Care™ initiative.”

The partners originally anticipated to launch the Emterra Clean Community Cup™ (ECCC) in October 2020 that was postponed due to COVID-19. The Peterborough hockey community can expect more news about the relaunch of ECCC in the coming months.
