Emterra Group Adds 14 Environmentally-friendly Natural Gas-Fuelled Waste and Recycling Trucks to BC Fleet

April 09, 2014

SURREY, BC (April 9, 2014) – Emterra Group will be making a bigger contribution to cleaner air and a healthier environment in British Columbia when it adds 14 new cleaner-burning, compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to its recycling and garbage fleet in the coming months.

The technologically-advanced trucks are made possible through incentive funding of $470,000 provided by FortisBC in recognition of Emterra’s commitment to the more sustainable and “greener” collection and transportation of recycling, organics and waste.

John Walker, president and CEO of FortisBC noted that the incentives “help companies switch to natural gas, which is a cost-effective and abundant fuel source in British Columbia that also helps reduce emissions.”

Emterra, which provides waste, recycling and organics collection and processing for municipalities and businesses throughout BC, plans to use the new trucks in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Surrey and Vancouver’s North Shore.  Natural gas engines reduce CO2 and other Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by up to 20% and operate at 50% to 90% less engine noise compared to their diesel counterparts.

“We are very grateful to FortisBC for their support,” said Ed Walsh, Emterra’s VP of Operations in BC.  “Emterra was among the first waste management companies in Canada to invest in compressed natural gas-fuelled trucks as part of our corporate sustainability commitment. With the new order, we’ll have more than 70 CNG heavy trucks including the largest fleet in the world operating in a cold weather climate in Winnipeg.”

FortisBC is a regulated utility focused on providing safe and reliable energy, including natural gas, electricity and propane. The incentive funding program is offered under BC’s 2012 Greenhouse Gas Reduction regulation to offset up to 75% of the cost for a natural gas engine over a diesel engine.
