Emterra Environmental pulling out the stops to catch up on waste, recycling and organics collection

January 06, 2018

Emterra Environmental is pulling out the stops to catch up on waste, recycling and organics collection after holidays and unseasonably cold weather have resulted in delays.

We understand that this is an inconvenience for residents of the Region of Niagara and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding. We have extended our hours of operation and are actively recruiting additional temporary and full time workers to address the situation.

The delays are the culmination of several events including:

  •  Larger volumes of materials placed at the curb during the holiday season, 
  • Materials freezing in the green carts and garbage containers, 
  • Unseasonably cold weather with frigid temperatures and wind-chills of nearly -30C that have impacted the operation of our vehicles and workers, 
  • Shortage of staff,   
  • Heavier than normal snow falls that has hampered and slowed pick-ups.

Emterra sincerely apologizes that our operational challenges have impacted our customer service levels. We are utilizing local employment agencies and our own networks to speed up recruitment and create additional jobs in the community. As part of the recruitment effort, Emterra is holding a Job Fair on Thursday, January 11 from 3:00-7:00pm at the Welland Job Gym. These additional employees will contribute to an increased service level in the Region in the future.

Our employees are working extremely hard to complete collection and we appreciate their commitment to their work and their extra effort. Moving forward, our concerns are with the safety of our employees in the current weather conditions and providing a level of customer service that Emterra Environmental is committed to providing.

Again we thank the Region of Niagara and the residents for their patience as we make adjustments. We encourage residents to continue to follow the Region of Niagara’s website, social media pages and their Waste Management Info-Line for collection instructions and updated schedules.
