Emterra Environmental is working to resolve collection issues, one-by-one in the Region of Niagara

January 08, 2018

Emterra Environmental continues to catch-up on outstanding waste, recycling and organics collections in the Niagara Region and we are optimistic it will be back on schedule by the end of the week.

We apologize for these delays and the inconvenience this has caused our customers. We understand how frustrating this can be and our goal is to return to promised service levels as quickly as possible. Our efforts have been undermined by a combination of factors including:

  • Larger volumes of materials placed at the curb during the holiday season,

  • Materials freezing in the green carts and garbage containers,

  • Unseasonably cold weather with frigid temperatures and wind-chills of nearly -30C that have impacted the operation of our vehicles and workers,

  • Shortage of staff,

  • Heavier than normal snow falls that has hampered and slowed pick-ups.

Together these have contributed to a perfect storm impacting our service. We assure you that, one-by-one, we are working out these issues.  While the weather has improved, the forecast of a mixture of precipitation and varying temperatures could still pose challenging road conditions in the coming days. We are actively recruiting additional temporary and full-time workers to address staffing issues and we have brought crews in from other jurisdictions to augment our workforce when operations permit.

We understand this is an inconvenience for residents of the Region of Niagara and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding. We sincerely apologize that our operational challenges have affected our service levels.

Our employees are working extremely hard to complete collections as quickly and as safely as possible.  We appreciate their commitment to the work they do and to helping our organization deliver our service to the people of Niagara.

Emterra Environmental is holding a Job Fair on Thursday, January 11 from 3:00-7:00pm at the Welland Job Gym. These additional employees will help with the current situation and contribute to an increased service level in the Region in the future.
