Emterra Environmental helps 2015 Canada Winter Games Reach New Heights in Recycling

February 12, 2015

Prince George, BC (February 12, 2015) – For two weeks beginning in mid February, the City of Prince George in northern British Columbia will bustle with the excitement of the 2015 Canada Winter Games as 3,400 athletes and coaches, 4,500 volunteers, hundreds of media and thousands of visitors from across Canada converge on the community….and every one of them will be looking for places to recycle.

Fortunately, through the sponsorship of Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC), 550 recycling carts and bins will be positioned at all of the venues as well as throughout the city. Emterra Environmental, a Canadian leader in waste and recycling collection and management that has 10 facilities in BC, will be at its peak performance as it collects and manages all recyclables generated at the 14-day event. Emterra also provides single family curbside recycling services in Prince George under contract to MMBC.

But when the fastest downhill race and the most graceful figure skating jump have been entered into the record books, the usefulness of the recycling bins to divert recyclables from disposal in landfill will just be getting started.

MMBC intends to give the bins to Emterra so that recycling services for packaging and printed paper can be expanded beyond single family curbside to multi-unit apartments and condominiums across the city.

“Multi-Material BC is pleased to be able to contribute to the 2015 Canada Winter Games and their environmental legacy,” says Allen Langdon, Managing Director of Multi-Material BC. “Through this contribution we are not only assisting the 2015 Games in maintaining its sustainability objectives, but we are also able to expand opportunities for Prince George residents to recycle more materials, an essential step to help us increase the amount of packaging and printed paper that is diverted from landfills.”

Prince George Mayor, Lyn Hall, added, “As a community, having these bins in place during the 2015 Games will dramatically decrease the volume of waste going into our landfills. However, the true impacts will be experienced long term as multi-family dwellings will soon have access to the same curbside recycling program as single family homes.”

“Emterra is looking forward to participating in the success of the 2015 Canada Winter Games by ensuring the recycling process runs smoothly and as much materials are diverted from landfill. We’re equally excited that we’ll be able to reuse the collection bins by rolling out recycling to residents in multi-family homes,” said Ed Walsh, Emterra’s VP of Operations in BC.
