Emterra Group Named One of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the Seventh Consecutive Year

April 20, 2022

Emterra Group is proud to announce that the organization has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2022, marking it the seventh consecutive year of being awarded the coveted title. Emterra joins the list of employers across Canada that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness.

“Winning this award year-over-year is an honour and confirms that we are continuing on the right path as an employer of choice,” says Jennifer Malcolmson, Director of Human Resources at Emterra Group. “The diversity of our workforce is what continues to make Emterra Group a stronger, more inclusive, innovative leader in the industry and ultimately brings us one step closer to achieving our mission of enabling people and businesses to become stewards of the environment.”

The selection committee
of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, once again chose Emterra Group for this award based on a number of green initiatives, some of which include:

  • Partnerships with a number of community organizations, such as Canadian Tire's popular Jumpstart Foundation, collecting scrap tires from over 200 stores and converting for use as rubberized ground cover material in playgrounds.

  • Our formal Community Care™ program, where Emterra Group partners with local organizations to heighten awareness of and increase access to recycling and waste reduction -- such as the "Make Your Contribution at the Curb™" initiative that donates one dollar for each tonne of material recycled in select communities to local healthcare foundations.

  • Ongoing infrastructure investments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet operations with compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, representing over a third of its fleet, and the operation of three CNG refuelling stations, which are available to the public and other fleet operators.

"A great thing about these initiatives is that they have adapted to meet the needs of today’s quickly changing work environment,” says Chantel Watkins, Junior Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. “These employers are really putting their agility to use,” she says. “In the context of rapid changes in the realities of work, these employers have kept pace -- giving their staff new and innovative ways to stay engaged in the practice of sustainability."

Now in its 15th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers is an editorial competition that recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness. Winning employers, selected by editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers, are evaluated using four main criteria: (1) unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer's public identity, attracting new employees or customers.

The full list of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2022 was announced today in a special magazine co-published with The Globe and Mail.
