Many people say all lives matter. That is true, but the lived reality is, not all lives matter equally. Black Lives Matter. The marginalisation, violence and racial injustice needs to end. Change is needed and it will take all of us to make it happen.
After arriving in Canada in 1972 from Hong Kong, this nation has given me the opportunity to start and grow this business that now expands over four provinces and into the state of Michigan with a team of over 1,100 people strong. It has not been without hurdles and barriers brought on by racism— some stories too negative to repeat.
I have seen how far we've come, but these hurdles and barriers have not disappeared and we must recognize them, listen to how we can do better and activate change. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion are woven into the fabric of what makes Emterra Group great and I am proud that we reflect the communities we serve. I know we can still do better and the first step is listening and encouraging open conversations across our company for our employees to share their personal experiences with racism and social injustice.
Our Human Resources team, the Senior Leadership Team and I would welcome any feedback on how we could improve our inclusive and equity efforts within Emterra. You can email your feedback to hr@emterra.ca.
We will continue to promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in our culture, our hiring and business practices, and invest in employee training that improves inclusiveness and understanding of unconscious bias in all our locations. Please join me in eradicating racism in our company and in our communities.
With gratitude,
Emmie,
Founder and CEO
