Nearly 30 recyclers partner together across BC to deliver new program

Vancouver, BC (May 2, 2014) – Green by Nature EPR (GBN) is pleased to engage nearly 30 subcontractors - leaders in recycling in their local communities - to be part of the team to manage the post-collections system for Multi-Material BC’s (MMBC) residential packaging and printed paper recycling program. Together with GBN, the network of recyclers will begin delivering services to approximately 1.25 million households, totaling 185,000 tonnes of packaging and printed paper material after it has been collected from curbside households, multi-family buildings and depots across the province.

Among the subcontractors are organizations that are leaders in the industry and in their communities. They include a mixture of non-profit organizations, family businesses, private industry and local governments in each corner of BC.

• Encorp Pacific (Canada) is a not-for-profit, product stewardship corporation well known for the successful beverage container management system in BC. Encorp depots will continue to service communities throughout the province while Encorp’s extensive transportation infrastructure will assist in the movement of packaging and printed paper material from depots to processing facilities.
• Carney’s Waste Systems, a family business based in Squamish, has provided waste and recycling services in the Sea to Sky Corridor since 1965. As one of GBN’s subcontractors, Carney’s facility will receive and consolidate packaging and printed paper materials and provide transportation of those materials.
• Residents in Mount Waddington Regional District will be serviced by the local government, where the Regional District will continue to receive materials and prepare them for processing. Fox’s Disposal Services (Port Hardy), a family business operating in the North Island since 1970, will provide hauling services for the Region.
• Gold Trail Recycling is located in 100 Mile House and has operated the community’s recycling depot since 1996. In GBN’s network of recyclers, Gold Trail Recycling will now receive more materials at its facility from the curbside collection programs from 100 Mile House and 108 Mile House.

In addition, GBN’s extensive network of subcontractors includes Alpine Disposal (Grand Forks and Trail), Augusta Recyclers (Powell River), Cascades Recovery (multiple locations), Central Cariboo Disposal (Williams Lake), Central Okanagan Regional District, Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Direct Disposal (Sechelt), Do Your Part Recycling (Terrace), Emterra Environmental (multiple locations), FSJ Eco-Depot Recycling (Fort St. John), Merlin Plastics (multiple locations), Powell River Regional District, Town of Princeton, Progressive Waste Services (Nanaimo and Penticton), Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District, Smithers Recycling Society (Smithers), Smithrite Disposal (BC Interior), Southeast Disposal (Cranbrook), Sonbird Recycling (Ucluelet), Sun Coast Waste Services (Campbell River and Port Alberni), Urban Impact (New Westminster), VP Waste (Golden) and Waste Management (Castlegar) throughout the implementation of the program.

It is expected the list of GBN’s subcontractors will grow as recycling programs expand.

In May 2011, BC's Recycling Regulation was updated to include packaging and printed paper. The regulation shifts the responsibility for managing the residential recycling of packaging and printed paper from regional and municipal governments and their taxpayers to business.

Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is a non-profit industry-led and financed organization that will assume responsibility for managing residential packaging and printed paper recycling on behalf of industry in May 2014.
