April 16, 2024

The recycling and waste to resource company is honoured for its environmental leadership and commitment to sustainability.

Oakville, ON, April 16, 2024 - Emterra Group, a leader in recycling and waste to resource solutions, is proud to announce that it has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for the ninth consecutive year. The award, presented by Mediacorp Canada Inc., recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness and action.

"We are honoured and humbled to receive this recognition for the ninth year in a row. It is a testament to the vision, goals, innovation and work of our organization and the people that help make it a reality every day,” says Jennifer Malcolmson, Vice President of Human Resources at Emterra Group. “Emterra Group has always recognized that its diversity is one of its greatest strengths, and we lean on the diversity of our workforce to introduce new, innovative ideas that lead the way to a greener workplace."

Winning employers, selected by editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers, are evaluated using four main criteria: (1) unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether the environmental initiatives have become part of an employer's public identity, attracting new employees and customers.

Emterra Group was selected for the award based on a range of environmental initiatives, including:
  • The founding of Emterra Tire Recycling in 2005, which has grown to become Canada's leading supplier of crumb rubber that is used to create new products such as pavers and flowerpots.

  • Partnering with local organizations to heighten awareness and increase access to services and programs that recover waste as a resource -- such as the "Make Your Contribution at the Curb™" initiative that features a $1 donation for each tonne of material recycled by businesses and residents to a local charitable organization that supports community health and well-being.

  • Significant infrastructure investments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet operations with compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks and three CNG refueling stations that have been made available to the public and other companies.
Continuously reducing Emterra Group’s carbon footprint and increasing the circularity of its products and services to customers has been a long-standing goal for the business. “It is in our DNA and our origin story to create innovation in the circular economy that helps our customers meet their goals in sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective ways,” says Paulina Leung, Chief Sustainability Officer at Emterra Group. “We are grateful that our company is a means to expedite the transition to improved greener technologies and a circular economy that enables people and businesses to become stewards of the environment."
The full list of Canada’s Greenest Employers (2024) was announced today in a special magazine published by Mediacorp Canada Inc. and distributed online in The Globe and Mail.
