MONTREAL (November 22, 2013)—Emterra Group CEO and Founder, Emmie Leung, has been named the Canadian 2013 Canadian Waste Sector (CWS) Executive of the Year in the large private business category of the inaugural awards program.

Ms. Leung received the award at a luncheon hosted by the Ontario Waste Management Association at yesterday’s Canadian Waste and Recycling Expo taking place at Montreal’s Palais des Congres.

“This is the Oscar of the waste management industry and I am both overwhelmed and honoured to be recognized by my peers for my business achievements,” Leung said when she accepted the award. Judges comprised representatives from the waste and recycling industry in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

The CWS “Executive of the Year” Awards program shines the spotlight of achievement on outstanding individuals who play a key role in the growth of the waste sector services industry in Canada.

Leung’s Emterra Group has operations in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, as well as in the State of Michigan. She started the company 37 years ago, when, as a one-person operation, she did everything from slinging recyclables into the back of a van to driving the forklift truck. Today the company encompasses a network of 21 material recovery facilities and other waste management operations, more than 550 waste and recycling collection vehicles and over 1,000 employees.  Each year, Emterra markets more than 500,000 tonnes of recyclables selling approximately 70% to North American markets.

The company comprises four divisions:

  • Emterra Environmental providing waste collection and disposal and recycling resource management (collection, processing and commodities marketing)
  • Emterra Environment USA which provides similar services in the State of Michigan
  • Emterra Tire Recycling in Brampton, Ontario which collects and recycles used, unsaleable tires, and
  • Canadian Liquids Processors Limited in Hamilton, Ontario which provides confidential and secure liquids disposal and product destruction
