Emmie Leung named 'Gravity Defying' Finalist in Prestigious EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Awards

(Toronto, July 8, 2014)– Emterra Group Founder and CEO, Emmie Leung, has been named by Ernst & Young (EY) finalist in its EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Awards.

In an announcement yesterday, EY’s National and Ontario Entrepreneur Of The Year 2014 program director, Colleen McMorrows, said: "This year's finalists prove that the future of entrepreneurship in our country is brighter than ever. After 21 years of Entrepreneur Of The Year we're still amazed at how these leaders continue to defy the odds and the impossible. They are pushing their boundaries and propelling our country forward.”

EY's Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates the contribution and spirit of entrepreneurs everywhere. Award finalists from all areas of business are chosen based on their vision, leadership, financial success and social responsibility.

“I am overwhelmed and at the same time very proud to stand among the Canadian business leaders who have been selected as finalists in the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2014 Ontario program. It is an honour to receive this recognition for my life’s work,” Ms. Leung said. 

Emterra Group is a leader in waste resources management; collecting, recycling and marketing packaging, printed paper and scrap tires; and converting waste liquids into green products like ethanol and windshield washer fluid.  

In May, EY notified Leung that she had been selected, along with 120 other Ontario entrepreneurs, as a nominee for the program. Nomination criteria explored how personal and business standards contributed to success; how the nominee demonstrated perseverance and overcame obstacles; how the business was built in the face of personal and financial risk; how the nominee overcame obstacles within the industry; and how their vision and plan for the future would contribute to the growth of their business. 

The Ontario winners will be announced at a gala on October 29, 2014. The overall Ontario winner will represent the region at the national gala held in Toronto on November 25, 2014.

With more than 700 offices in 150 countries, Ernst & Young, recently rebranded as EY, is one of the largest and most prestigious corporate professional services firms in the world.

Leung and Emterra have received recognition in the past year as an innovative industry leader. Recent honours include Leung being named:

  • Canadian 2013 Executive of the Year in the large private business category by the Canadian Waste Sector
  • 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurs

  • Top ten companies in 2013 Canadian Private Sector Growth program by Grant Thornton LLP and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce
  • Employer of the Year by the Manitoba Filipino Business Council

Canadian Liquid Processors Limited, an Emterra family company received top honours from the Recycling Council of Ontario in the Sustainable Products or Service category for its environmentally-friendly, non-toxic, closed-loop windshield washer fluid, Transformations, which is manufactured from waste liquids such as sugar and alcohol-based consumer beverages.
