Can your recycling boxes fight cancer? In Niagara Region, you bet!
Emterra Environmental is the Region of Niagara’s waste and recycling contractor. We’ve been providing collection services since 2011 for Niagara’s recyclables along with Green Bin organics, yard waste, bulk waste, white goods and garbage from households, local businesses and public spaces. And we’ve been making cash donations to Niagara’s Walker Family Cancer Centre (at St. Catharines) under our Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ program ever since.
This year, we’ll donate more than $37,800 – $1 for every tonne Niagara residents recycled in 2016. This brings the total Emterra has donated to help improve cancer care in Niagara to $240,930.
How much we donate each year is all up to you, Niagara. Recycle more and we donate more.
Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ is a unique program created in Niagara for Niagara. You can be proud of it because, really, it is all about you. By making sure you and your household recycle everything that is accepted in your blue and grey boxes, and use street recycling bins when you are out and about, you can push that donation to cancer care higher. Use these links to find out more about what goes into your blue and grey boxes.
Our partner in our Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ program is the Region of Niagara. The donations are made to the Niagara Health Systems OneFoundation to benefit the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
(Emterra also provides funding assistance to the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation through Make Your Contribution at the Curb™ modeled on the successful Niagara program.)
June 16, 2014 – All the recyclables Niagara residents put at the curb last year led to a significant gift from Niagara’s waste and recycling contractor, Emterra Group, of $44,000 presented today to the Niagara Health System’s (NHS) OneFoundation It’s Our Time campaign. The donation will support the Walker Family Cancer Centre and enhance cancer care services in Niagara Region.
Emmie Leung, Founder and CEO of Emterra Group, presented the cheque to Mike Watt, Chair of OneFoundation and Carol Potvin, director of the Walker Family Cancer Centre. Niagara Regional Chairman, Gary Burroughs, participated in the cheque presentation event.
“We’re really proud of the way Niagara residents have responded to the ‘Make Your Contribution at the Curb’ challenge. Congratulations, you have done an outstanding job and we encourage you to continue to find ways to recycle more because there’s room to grow the amount we donate,” said Leung.
Emterra’s pledge to contribute to the cancer centre is part of its Niagara Make Your Contribution at the CurbTM program. For every tonne recycled in Niagara Region, Emterra donates $1 to the OneFoundation. Since 2011, Emterra’s donations have totalled $120,000. The company has pledged to give up to $500,000 by 2018.
“It is through the generosity of donors such as Emterra that we are able to give cancer patients the personal treatment they need close to home. Linking support for patient services to an environmental initiative like recycling is an innovative way to point out to people that we can make a difference to the quality of life in our communities in all kinds of ways. The simple act of recycling more leads to better health care and a greener community for our family, friends and neighbours,” said Mike Watt.
Regional Chair, Gary Burroughs also talked about how Emterra’s Make Your Contribution at the CurbTM program makes a positive impact on Niagara communities.
“Emterra’s incredible support to the NHS through its Make Your Contribution at the CurbTM challenge is not only helping Niagara become more environmentally sustainable, it’s also helping us to build a stronger health-care system and a healthier Niagara community,” said Chair Burroughs. “We’re proud to be a supporter of this program.”
Emterra Group hopes that more businesses will develop programs that help improve the environment and communities across Canada.
“It’s our way of contributing to the environmental and social health and well-being in the communities we serve, live and work. We hope it will be an inspiration to other local businesses to step forward to do something positive for the environment. We have only one earth. We have to take care of it,” Leung said.
