Organic Waste

Since October 2004, Emterra Group’s Newmarket Organics Facility has been processing residential source separated organics (Green Bin) from the City of Toronto. The facility also produces green electricity from methane captured during organics processing.

Why Compost?

Because it’s good for the environment and will help Ontario achieve the 60% Waste Diversion Goal set by the Province of Ontario by 2008, while turning waste into valuable resources: nutrient-rich compost and "green" energy!

Waste Diversion

Ontario residents have demonstrated opposition to landfilling waste. Since 30% to 40% of household waste is organic and following the strong support of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), composting is a critical component of waste diversion and will help Ontario reach its objective of 60% waste diversion by 2008. The Newmarket Facility will eventually divert over 100,000 tonnes per year of organic waste from landfill, or more than 10% of what is currently being shipped to Michigan each year from the City of Toronto's residents. Fewer trips to the landfill also mean reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the hauling trucks.

Renewable Energy

A valuable product of the process used at the Newmarket Facility is biogas, which is high in methane. The methane is used as fuel to produce clean energy. The ‘green’ electricity powers the entire plant, while the excess is sold back into the Ontario Power Grid, making the Newmarket Facility more self-sufficient.
