Emterra’s $40,000 Donation Supports Cancer Care in Niagara Region

ST. CATHARINES, ON (June 5, 2015) – Niagara Region residents helped fight cancer with their recycling boxes last year and as a result of how much they recycled, Emterra Environmental presented a cheque for close to $40,000 to OneFoundation for Niagara Health System in support of cancer care in the region. This donation brings the total amount that Emterra has given to the Walker Family Cancer Centre at the Niagara Health System St. Catharines Site over the past four years to $160,000.

What makes this donation unique is Emterra’s one-of-a-kind “Make Your Contribution at the Curb™” (MYCATC) program. It pledges an annual donation of $1 per tonne for every tonne of recyclables Niagara residents set out in their grey and blue boxes, plus every tonne of used batteries collected and a dollar for every scrap tire recycled at their Eco Depot events.

As residents increase the amount they recycle week after week, it affects how much Emterra donates. The more residents recycle, the more Emterra contributes to the OneFoundation’s fund raising efforts!

The company has pledged up to $500,000 over seven years to 2018.

Niagara Health System’s Medical Director of Oncology, Dr. Janice Giesbrecht, accepted the cheque on behalf of OneFoundation and together with Walker Family Cancer Centre Clinical Manager, Bonnie Van Veen; Interim Director of Fundraising Peter McKinley and Foundation board member, Anne Atkinson, provided a tour of the cancer centre facilities for Emterra Environmental VP of Corporate Strategy and Business Development, Paulina Leung, and Emterra Environmental VP Operations for Ontario, Brian Gogo.

“We are honoured to be a part of the Niagara Region community and to be able to provide this support to the Walker Family Cancer Centre,” said Leung. “By linking participation in recycling programs to donations like this, Emterra is not only helping to expand  access to cancer care services in Niagara, but is also actively building greener communities by challenging people to improve their recycling habits and divert more from the landfill.”

Emterra’s Niagara “Make Your Contribution at the Curb™” program is a major initiative of the company’s Community Care™ program. The goal of MYCATC is to improve the environmental health and well being of communities where Emterra provides resource recycling and waste management collection and processing services.

In Niagara, MYCATC is sponsored by Post Media publications; the St. Catharines Standard, the Niagara Falls Review, the Welland Tribune, and by the Region of Niagara.

A similar MYCATC has been initiated in the Courtenay/Comox area of British Columbia on Vancouver Island to support St. Joseph’s Hospital.
